Three sample CliftonStrengths items

Every item presents two self-descriptive statements. Rate which one describes you better on a 5-point scale with a neutral midpoint. Twenty-second cap per item.

Sample 1: Executing theme pair
Rate which statement describes you better:
  • A.Strongly describes me: "I like to complete every task I start"
  • B.Moderately describes me: left statement
  • C.Neutral
  • D.Moderately describes me: right statement
  • E.Strongly describes me: "I like to start many tasks and keep options open"
Answer and walkthrough
. The left statement probes Achiever (Executing domain); the right probes Activator (Influencing). Your choice shifts which themes trend into your Top 5. Neutral produces low signal across 177 items; commit to a direction.
Sample 2: Strategic Thinking theme pair
Rate which statement describes you better:
  • A.Strongly describes me: "I enjoy collecting information for its own sake"
  • B.Moderately describes me: left
  • C.Neutral
  • D.Moderately describes me: right
  • E.Strongly describes me: "I enjoy seeing how ideas connect to each other"
Answer and walkthrough
. Left probes Input (Strategic Thinking); right probes Ideation (Strategic Thinking). Both are in the same domain, so this item does not push between domains but between themes within one domain.
Sample 3: Relationship Building theme pair
Rate which statement describes you better:
  • A.Strongly describes me: "I notice how individuals differ from each other"
  • B.Moderately describes me: left
  • C.Neutral
  • D.Moderately describes me: right
  • E.Strongly describes me: "I notice how everyone is connected"
Answer and walkthrough
. Left probes Individualization; right probes Connectedness. Both are in the Relationship Building domain. The 20-second clock forces first-instinct answer, which Gallup's research shows produces more accurate theme ranking than deliberation.

What the real CliftonStrengths feels like

The real CliftonStrengths is delivered through gallup.com or the Gallup Access portal. 177 items with 20 seconds per item, auto-advance if you do not answer. Total duration is around 35 to 45 minutes.

Your Top 5 report is included with the standard access code. The full 34-theme ranking is a separate paid upgrade. Many employers who offer CliftonStrengths to employees pay for the full ranking because theme 6 through 34 still add context for role fit.

Employers use CliftonStrengths most commonly for post-hire development, onboarding, and team composition, less commonly for pre-hire selection. Gallup themselves use it for internal hiring with strong validation research. Most other employers use Top 5 as a conversation starter, not a selection filter.
