Hogan assessment practice test: know the format before you take it

Hogan is a set of personality questionnaires that employers send to candidates for jobs from graduate schemes to senior leadership. It does not test what you know. It asks how you tend to behave at work, how you act under pressure and what you value, then gives the employer a report to compare with the job.

3separate inventories an employer can send
~15-20minutes each, untimed
206statements in the HPI alone
0right or wrong answers

This pack gives you a full practice run in the same agree / disagree format, then a practice profile, your blind spots under pressure, a consistency check and a comparison with six typical jobs. Try the first 12 statements and the sample result free.

The three Hogan inventories

An employer can send one, two or all three. Your invitation email or the assessment portal lists which ones you have. Leadership roles often get all three. Many other roles get the HPI and the HDS.

HPI

Hogan Personality Inventory

The bright side: you on a normal day

  • 206 statements, true or false (a four-point agree scale is also offered)
  • About 15 to 20 minutes
  • 7 main scales, plus a check for unusual answer patterns

Practised in Part 1

HDS

Hogan Development Survey

The dark side: you under pressure

  • 168 statements, agree or disagree
  • About 15 to 20 minutes
  • 11 "derailers": strengths that turn into problems under strain

Practised in Part 2

MVPI

Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory

The inside: what drives you

  • 200 statements, agree, unsure or disagree
  • About 15 to 20 minutes
  • 10 values, such as recognition, security and commerce

Explained here, not practised

Some employers add Hogan's reasoning test (the HBRI) or its Judgment assessment. Those are different formats and are not covered here.

What one screen looks like

Statement 14 of 178I like to finish what I start.AgreeDisagree

Each screen shows one short statement about you. You say whether it is true of you:

  • Agree (or true) if it describes you, and
  • Disagree (or false) if it does not.

There is no "it depends" button on the HPI and HDS. Go with what is true most of the time.

Why it feels different from other tests

The statements are short and easy to read, and many of them sound like they have an obvious "good" answer. They do not. Hogan compares your answers with a very large group of working adults, so a very high score is not always good. Someone who agrees with every confident, calm, sociable statement can come out as overconfident or hard to read.

Hogan also looks for answer patterns that do not add up, such as claiming you have never once been annoyed at work. Trying to look perfect is the most common way people spoil their own report.

The 7 work-style scales (HPI)

AdjustmentStaying calm under pressure
AmbitionDrive to lead and get ahead
SociabilityLiking company and talking
Interpersonal SensitivityWarmth and tact
PrudencePlanning, rules and self-discipline
InquisitiveCuriosity and new ideas
Learning ApproachEnjoying learning and staying current

The 11 derailers (HDS), in three groups

Moving away from people

Under strain you pull back, protect yourself or slow things down.

Excitable 路 Skeptical 路 Cautious 路 Reserved 路 Leisurely

Moving against people

Under strain you push harder, take risks or seek the spotlight.

Bold 路 Mischievous 路 Colorful 路 Imaginative

Moving toward people

Under strain you try harder to please or to control the detail.

Diligent 路 Dutiful

Everyone has some of these. A derailer is a strength pushed too far: careful becomes slow to decide, confident becomes not listening. Knowing your top two or three is useful long after the test.

How this practice run works

  • Part 1: 112 work-style statements in the HPI format. Part 2: 66 statements in the HDS derailer format.
  • Every statement is our own. None are copied from Hogan, so do not expect to see these exact sentences on the day.
  • Answer on first instinct, thinking about yourself at work. A few seconds a statement is normal.
  • Your progress is saved on this device. You can stop and come back.
  • At the end you get a practice profile, your likely blind spots, a consistency check and a comparison with six typical jobs.

Hogan assessment practice: common questions

Can you practise for the Hogan assessment?

You cannot practise right answers, because there are none: Hogan itself tells candidates to just be honest. You can practise the format, short statements you agree or disagree with, around 200 per inventory. Knowing the format and your own blind spots under pressure means the test does not surprise you and the interview questions that follow do not either.

What is the difference between the HPI, HDS and MVPI?

The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI, 206 statements) describes how you work on a normal day on 7 scales. The Hogan Development Survey (HDS, 168 statements) describes 11 derailers, strengths that turn into problems under pressure. The Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI, 200 statements) describes 10 values. Each takes about 15 to 20 minutes. This pack practises the HPI and HDS formats and explains the MVPI.

Are these the real Hogan questions?

No. Every statement in this pack is our own, mapped to the same 7 work-style scales and 11 derailers Hogan reports use. Hogan items are not copied, so do not expect to see these exact sentences in your real test. The practice profile is not your Hogan result.

Can you fake the Hogan test?

Trying to look perfect usually backfires. Hogan compares you with a very large group of working adults and watches for answers that look managed, and a very high score is not always good. This pack has its own "too good to be true" check and repeated ideas, so you can see whether your answers hang together.

What do I get for free, and what does the full pack cost?

Free: the format guide, the first 12 statements, a complete sample result and the honest guidance. The full pack is $29, a one-time payment for 30 days of access with no subscription. It unlocks the whole 178-statement run, your own profile and blind spots, the consistency check and the comparison with six typical jobs.
