Network+ in one paragraph

CompTIA Network+ N10-009 is a vendor-neutral, foundational networking certification. The exam has a maximum of 90 questions, a 90-minute time limit, and a scaled passing score of 720 on a 100 to 900 range. It mixes multiple-choice items with performance-based questions (PBQs) across five domains: Networking Concepts, Network Implementation, Network Operations, Network Security, and Network Troubleshooting. Scoring is weighted, so harder items count more and there is no per-domain minimum. It is widely recognized as a core requirement for junior network administrator and support roles.

What you get with the full bank

The largest bank of original CompTIA Network+ practice questions anywhere, 2,610 of them across 29 full-length timed forms, written to the N10-009 Exam Objectives. Full coverage of all five domains, weighted to the official blueprint: Networking Concepts, Network Implementation, Network Operations, Network Security, and Network Troubleshooting.

A clear rationale for every question. We explain why the correct answer is correct and why each other option is wrong, so you build the reasoning the exam actually tests rather than memorizing answers. PBQ-style items are included: subnet planning, VLAN and trunk configuration, routing choice, wireless channel selection, and structured troubleshooting, re-authored as single-best-answer scenarios that work on any device.

Two ways to practice. Exam mode is a timed, full-length 90-question form that matches the real domain weighting, so you rehearse under exam conditions. Study mode lets you practice by domain, review rationales as you go, and retry the questions you missed.

The five N10-009 domains and their official weight

Every one of the 29 forms is built to the same domain weighting, so each is a true full-length rehearsal of the real exam. Weights are taken from the N10-009 objectives document, not from the retired N10-008 figures that most pages still quote.

Networking Concepts (23%)

The OSI and TCP/IP models, ports and protocols, cabling and connectors, topologies and architectures, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting, and cloud, SDN, and virtualization concepts. The vocabulary the other four domains build on.

Network Implementation (20%)

Routing and switching features (VLANs, trunking, STP, port aggregation), wireless standards and deployment including Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, and the physical installation of network devices and appliances. Heavy on configure-this-to-achieve-that judgment.

Network Operations (19%)

Documentation and lifecycle management, monitoring with SNMP, flow, and logs, disaster recovery and high availability, organizational and change processes, and basic network automation. The day-to-day running of a network.

Network Security (14%)

The lightest domain. Logical and physical security, zero trust and SASE, common attack types, network hardening, remote access and VPN, and access control. Enough security to run a network safely, without the depth of a security-specific track.

Network Troubleshooting (24%)

The single heaviest domain. The structured troubleshooting methodology, diagnosing cable and physical-layer faults, addressing and routing problems, wireless issues, and choosing the correct diagnostic tool. Where applied reasoning is tested hardest.

Try five real Network+ questions, one from each domain

Five items straight out of the N10-009 bank, one per domain. Four of the five hand you command output and expect you to read it, which is how the real exam separates people who have run a network from people who have only read about one. None of these five appears in the free diagnostic or in any of the 29 paid tests. Click a question to reveal the answer and the reasoning.

Sample 1: Networking Concepts
A payroll integration at Birchwood Logistics must call a partner API documented only as https://api.partner.example/v2/employees, with no port number shown. Sipho Dlamini is writing the egress firewall request. Which destination port should he request?
  • A.TCP 80
  • B.TCP 443
  • C.TCP 8080
  • D.TCP 8443
Sample 2: Network Implementation
Mehmet is configuring a Cisco Catalyst switch in VTP transparent mode at Ozturk Ceramics. VLAN 60 has not been created yet. He enters the following and sees this message: SW1(config)# interface gi1/0/15 SW1(config-if)# switchport mode access SW1(config-if)# switchport access vlan 60 % Access VLAN does not exist. Creating vlan 60 What is the result?

Sample 5: Network Troubleshooting
An engineer at Bellweather Theatre cannot ping a lighting controller, 10.60.8.30, from router R2, which has a connected interface on 10.60.8.0/24. Every echo request times out. Immediately afterwards the engineer runs: R2# show ip arp 10.60.8.30 Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface Internet 10.60.8.30 0 0050.c2a7.14e9 ARPA GigabitEthernet0/2 What does this indicate?
  • A.R2 has no route to 10.60.8.0/24 and cannot send the echoes
  • B.The controller is present but is not answering ICMP echo
  • C.The controller is powered off and R2 is showing a leftover entry
  • D.A cabling fault is stopping frames reaching the controller

N10-008 vs N10-009: what actually changed

The English N10-008 exam retired in December 2024. Most study material still circulating was written for it, and the domain weights moved enough that preparing to the old blueprint mis-allocates your time. The headline: Network Security lost five points and Network Troubleshooting is now the heaviest domain on the exam.

DomainN10-008N10-009Shift

2. Network Implementations, renamed Network Implementation19%20%Up 1
3. Network Operations16%19%Up 3
4. Network Security19%14%Down 5, the biggest move
5. Network Troubleshooting22%24%Up 2, now the heaviest

Weights from the CompTIA N10-009 exam objectives and CompTIA's own version comparison. The new material sits almost entirely in objective 1.8: SDN and SD-WAN, VXLAN and data center interconnect, zero trust, SASE and SSE, and infrastructure as code. CompTIA publishes additions only, so any page claiming N10-009 removed a topic is guessing. PrepClubs is not affiliated with CompTIA.

What Network+ actually costs, and what it takes to keep it

The voucher is $399, and that is the number most pages leave out

CompTIA lists the N10-009 exam voucher at $399. That is the bare exam and nothing else: one attempt, no retake, no training. If you fail, the next attempt is another $399, which is the single most expensive way to discover you were not ready.

CompTIA sells four bundles above that, all of which include a retake. Voucher plus Retake Assurance is $519. The Practice and Exam bundle with retake is $548. Learn and Exam with retake is $916. The Complete bundle with retake is $978. The $120 gap between the bare voucher and the retake bundle is the real decision: it is insurance against sitting again, priced at roughly a third of a fresh attempt.

This is worth doing the arithmetic on before you book. A bare voucher plus one failed attempt is $798. The retake bundle covers the same two attempts for $519. If you are not scoring consistently above the line in practice, the bundle is cheaper than optimism.

Passing is not the end: 30 CEUs and $150 over three years

Network+ is valid for three years. Renewing it takes 30 continuing education units, plus a CE fee of $150 across the cycle, billed at $50 a year. Note that 30 is the Network+ figure specifically. Security+ requires 50, and CompTIA has a stale FAQ page that still quotes 50 for Network+, so the number is easy to get wrong.

The lowest-friction route is CertMaster CE, a single activity that covers the whole 30 CEUs and takes most people 8 to 10 hours. You can also earn CEUs by collecting a higher CompTIA certification, completing relevant training, teaching, or documenting work experience.

Budget the full picture before you start: $399 to sit, then $150 and 30 CEUs every three years to keep it. Roughly $550 across the first cycle, assuming you pass first time.

How the two kinds of PBQ behave, and why it changes your timing

CompTIA runs two different performance-based question formats and they do not behave the same way under the clock. Simulations can be skipped and returned to later. Virtual environment questions cannot: once you are in one, you finish it there.

Both award partial credit, and CompTIA states plainly that there can be more than one valid way to solve a question. So a PBQ you half-finish is still worth something, and an unconventional but working solution is not automatically wrong.

The practical consequence is that the usual advice to skip every PBQ and come back is only half right. It works for simulations. On a virtual environment item you are committed, so the decision to engage has to be made before you start rather than after you have read it.

What the roles actually pay

CompTIA Career Explorer, CompTIA's own tool, lists median pay for the roles Network+ maps to: network support specialist at $68,000, junior network administrator at $90,000, systems administrator at $90,000, and junior systems engineer at $130,000.

Two caveats we will state rather than bury. These are role medians for people doing the job, not earnings attributable to holding the certification, and CompTIA does not date the figures. Anyone quoting you a precise "Network+ holders earn X" number is inventing the causal link.

How Network+ is scored

The N10-009 exam has a maximum of 90 questions and a 90-minute time limit. The passing score is 720 on a scaled range of 100 to 900. Scoring is weighted, which means harder items count for more, so the pass line is not a clean percentage and there is no minimum you must hit in any single domain.

Because the scale is not a raw percentage, there is no published question-to-score formula. Performance-based questions can award partial credit, and harder items carry more weight than an easy recall item. Our exam-mode form mirrors the 90-question, domain-weighted structure so your practice percentage tracks close to real exam conditions.

Performance-based questions usually appear first and take longer than a single multiple-choice item, and the usual advice to flag them and come back is only half right. CompTIA runs two PBQ formats: you can skip a simulation and return to it, but you cannot do that with a virtual environment item. Decide whether to engage before you start one, not after. Both award partial credit, and CompTIA states there can be more than one valid way to solve a question, so a half-finished PBQ is still worth something.

Who uses the Network+?

Network+ is a common baseline for junior network administrator, network technician, and help desk roles, and it is a recognized step between the entry-level A+ certification and more advanced networking or security tracks. Organizations that hire heavily for infrastructure and support roles routinely list it as a requirement or a strong preference.

A Network+ prep approach (about 30 days)

Days 1-3: Take the free diagnostic and read your domain breakdown

Start with the free 25-question timed diagnostic. It scores you domain by domain so you can see exactly where you stand before spending a cent. Your two weakest domains become the focus of the plan.

Days 4-14: Study mode by domain, weakest first

Work through study mode one domain at a time, reading the rationale on every question including the ones you get right. Troubleshooting and Networking Concepts carry the most weight together, so do not leave them for last.

Days 15-24: Drill subnetting and PBQ-style items

Subnetting math and scenario items are the number-one candidate anxiety point. Work the addressing, VLAN and trunk logic, routing choice, wireless channel planning, and structured troubleshooting items until the reasoning is automatic.

Days 25-29: Full-length timed forms

Sit exam-mode forms under a strict 90-minute clock. Aim to consistently clear the pass approximation with time to spare, and review every miss by domain.

Day 30: Light review and rest

Review only your flagged and missed items from the last two forms. Do not cram new material the day before. Settled recall beats last-minute volume.

Common Network+ mistakes

Memorizing answers instead of reasoning

N10-009 is scenario-heavy. If you learn "answer B" without the why, a reworded stem will beat you. Read the rationale on every question, especially the ones you got right.

Skipping the subnetting practice

Subnetting and addressing math shows up across Concepts and Troubleshooting. Candidates who avoid it lose fast points. Drill CIDR, subnet masks, and host counts until they are automatic.

Studying to old objectives

Free question dumps are often written to a retired exam code and offer no rationale. N10-009 changed the domain structure from the prior version. Practice built to the current objectives is what matters.

Underweighting troubleshooting

Troubleshooting is the single heaviest domain at 24 percent, and it rewards following the methodology and picking the right diagnostic tool. Do not treat it as an afterthought behind the concepts domain.
