Ramsay Maintenance Test (MecTest and MultiCrafTest): Format, Scoring and Practice
When an employer says you will take "the Ramsay test" for a maintenance job, they usually mean one of Ramsay Corporation's journey-level job-knowledge tests: MecTest for mechanical maintenance, or MultiCrafTest for multicraft roles that add electrical work. Both are 60 multiple-choice questions with four options each. What the Ramsay maintenance test is
Ramsay Corporation publishes a family of maintenance job-knowledge tests. They measure what a maintenance mechanic or technician already knows about equipment, not general aptitude, so the questions assume trade vocabulary: sheaves, spool valves, NPSH, packing glands, fillet welds.
MecTest is the one Ramsay describes as most often used for repair or maintenance mechanics, and it has Ramsay's largest norm sample (11,030 people). It has 60 items across eight areas, all mechanical. MultiCrafTest is for multicraft maintenance technicians: 60 items across seven areas, keeping the mechanical areas and adding motors and control circuits, electronics and PLCs, and AC/DC theory.
Every item is multiple choice with four options, A to D. Ramsay offers both tests on paper and online, and they are proctored. Items are short: a one-line question or an incomplete sentence ("The main purpose of a ... is to") with options of a few words. Some items use a drawing, for example a part or a print to read.
Ramsay also sells trainee and entry versions (Mechanical Maintenance Trainee, MultiCraft Trainee), a Millwright test, an ElecTest for electricians and a longer Maintest diagnostic. If your invitation names one of those, the content overlaps heavily with MecTest and MultiCrafTest, but the level differs.
The content areas
Ramsay publishes the areas but not the number of items in each. Our MecTest-style forms follow the per-area split reported by third-party prep guides (shown in brackets).
Hydraulics and Pneumatics (about 15)
Pumps, pressure, directional and flow control valves, cylinders, accumulators, fluid condition, compressors and FRL units, and fluid power symbols. The biggest single area on MecTest.
Mechanical Maintenance (about 10)
Bearings, shaft alignment, couplings, seals and packing, fasteners, vibration causes, conveyors, predictive maintenance and lockout.
Shop Machines, Tools and Equipment (about 8)
Hand and power tools, drill press, lathe and grinder practice, micrometers, calipers and dial indicators, taps and dies, basic metal properties.
Welding and Rigging (about 7)
Stick, MIG, TIG and oxy-fuel basics, electrode codes, weld defects, weld symbols, hot-work safety, slings, sling angles, hitches, shackles and crane signals.
Pumps and Piping (about 7)
Centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, cavitation, priming, seals, valve types and uses, pipe joints, water hammer and steam traps. MultiCrafTest adds combustion: boilers, burners and flame safety.
Power Transmission (about 5)
V-belts, timing belts, roller chain, gears and gearboxes, speed and torque ratios, clutches and brakes.
Print Reading (about 4)
Line types, views, dimensions and tolerances, thread callouts and title blocks. On MultiCrafTest, print reading sits with electrical schematics.
Lubrication (about 4)
Viscosity and ISO grades, NLGI grease grades, grease compatibility, over-greasing, contamination and oil analysis.
MultiCrafTest only: three electrical areas
Motors, control circuits, schematics and print reading; digital electronics, power supplies, computers and PLCs, and test instruments; basic AC/DC theory, power distribution and electrical maintenance.

How the Ramsay maintenance test is scored
Your score is the number correct out of 60. Ramsay reports it to the employer with local and national percentile ranks. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
Ramsay publishes no pass mark. Each employer sets its own cut score for the role. Pass marks such as "80 percent" that you may see online come from prep sites, not from Ramsay.
For context, Ramsay's published norms put the average at 38.4 out of 60 on MecTest (64 percent) and 29.0 out of 60 on MultiCrafTest (48 percent), so MultiCrafTest is the harder of the two. Ramsay does not publish a time limit for either test; prep guides report about an hour, which is what our practice forms use.
A three-week Ramsay maintenance prep plan
Days 1 to 2: Take the diagnostic
Sit a full 60-question MecTest-style form in 60 minutes. The area split at the end shows where your points are. Most candidates are strong in what they do every day and weak in two or three areas they rarely touch.
Days 3 to 9: Work your two weakest areas
Read the explanation for every miss, then fill the gap from a trade textbook or your plant's manuals. For hydraulics, learn what each valve type does and the standard symbols. For welding, learn electrode codes and the arrow side rule.
Days 10 to 14: Timed full-length forms
One form a day at 60 minutes. If your test is MultiCrafTest, switch to the MultiCraft-style forms, which add motors, controls, PLCs and AC/DC theory.
Days 15 to 19: Review your misses by area
Group wrong answers by area. A cluster of misses in one area is a gap to study, not bad luck.
Days 20 to 21: Final form and rest
One last timed form, then rest. Bring nothing electronic: Ramsay's proctors collect devices, so practise the arithmetic items by hand.
Common Ramsay maintenance test traps
Treating it like an aptitude test
You cannot reason your way to what a sequence valve does or what the 70 in E7018 means. It is a knowledge test: the fix is learning the facts, not speed.
Only practising your own trade
A strong hydraulics mechanic can still lose ten points on welding, rigging and print reading. Breadth across all areas lifts the score most.
Confusing similar components
Relief versus reducing valves, pump versus motor symbols, gate versus globe valves, arrow side versus other side on a weld symbol. The distractors are built from these mix-ups.
