Aptitude Tests for Police Officer Recruitment: The Cognitive Screen Before the Academy

Police officer recruitment has used cognitive tests for decades, and the testing stack has been repeatedly validated against on-the-job performance. The tests filter for the general cognitive ability that predicts academy success and, later, incident report quality and decision-making under pressure. US departments, UK constabularies, and Canadian police services all run some version of this screen. Your academic record matters less than you think. The test matters more.

How police officer recruitment actually runs

Police recruitment funnels are long and heavily structured: application, cognitive test, physical abilities test, background investigation, psychological evaluation, oral board interview, medical, polygraph (US), academy offer. The cognitive test is usually one of the earliest gates, often in the first two weeks.

Wonderlic is common at US municipal departments, especially in the Midwest and South. The POST (Police Officer Selection Test) is a Wonderlic variant specifically normed against police recruits. 50 questions, 12 minutes (or a 50-question, 25-minute variant at some departments). Cutoffs vary widely by department; rural departments often accept 15, while large metropolitan departments target 21 or higher.

Raven's Progressive Matrices appears in UK constabularies and in some US departments as a supplement to the Wonderlic. Raven's measures fluid intelligence with pure pattern-recognition items and is considered "culture-free," making it attractive for diverse recruiting pools. Most police deployments are 30 questions in 20 minutes.

Additional tests often include a situational judgment test with policing scenarios, a personality instrument (MMPI-2 or MMPI-2-RF at the psychological evaluation stage), and jurisdiction-specific knowledge checks on legal or procedural basics.

What police officer aptitude tests screen for

The trait cluster is specific: general cognitive ability as an academy-success predictor, pattern recognition for investigative work, and basic numerical fluency for report writing and calculation.

General cognitive ability

Wonderlic is a broad cognitive screen. For police hiring, it predicts academy completion, written test performance, and probationary-period performance with strong validity. The single best predictor in common use.

Fluid pattern recognition (Raven's)

Raven's Matrices measures non-verbal reasoning. For police work, this maps to spotting anomalies in scenes, noticing pattern changes in beat coverage, and making inferences from incomplete information. Indirectly weighted but real.

Verbal fluency for report writing

Wonderlic vocabulary and verbal items predict report-writing quality. Officers who fail basic vocabulary items write reports that require heavy supervisor editing.

Numerical reasoning for basic math

Arithmetic on incident reports (distances, speeds, quantities), basic timeline calculations, and routine number work. Police tests include arithmetic items at the level of retail management tests.

Decision speed under time pressure

Wonderlic's pacing (14 seconds per question) tests the same trait officers use in rapid-decision scenarios. Not a direct match to use-of-force decisions but correlated.

Reading comprehension for legal text

Wonderlic reading items with dense passages. For police, this maps to the daily task of reading laws, policies, warrants, and case materials. Reading precision is tested.

A 10-day prep plan for police officer aptitude tests

Day 1: Identify your department's test

Most US departments use Wonderlic or the POST variant. Some use the National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST). UK constabularies use bespoke batteries that often include Raven's. Confirm from your recruitment packet.

Days 2 to 4: Wonderlic comprehensive drills

25 items per day across all families: arithmetic, vocabulary, logic, common-sense. 12-minute timed sessions. Build pace discipline first, accuracy second.

Day 5: Verbal and reading comprehension

Reading-focused drills using short dense passages. 15 items. Focus on factual extraction, not opinion.

Day 6: Raven's Matrices (if applicable)

20 matrix items at 60 seconds each. Focus on recognizing the transformation family (addition, rotation, progression) in the first 10 seconds.

Day 7: First full mock

One full 12-minute Wonderlic mock sat cold. Score by family. Identify the weakest.

Day 8: Targeted cleanup

Deep work on weakest family. 30 items concentrated there.

Day 9: Second full mock

One more full mock to confirm your pacing. Aim for your department's cutoff plus 3 points of buffer.

Day 10: Light review, rest

20-minute warm-up. Sleep well. The cognitive test often comes the same day as physical tests at some departments; manage your energy.

Wonderlic arithmetic (police flavor)

A patrol unit responded to 12 calls in an 8-hour shift. If 25 percent were domestic disturbances and 15 percent were traffic collisions, how many calls were neither? 15 seconds. 60 percent of 12 is 7.2, rounds to 7. The test sometimes uses specific numbers to avoid rounding; watch the phrasing.

Wonderlic vocabulary

"VIGILANT most nearly means: (a) tired, (b) alert, (c) angry, (d) careless." 5 seconds. Vocabulary level is SAT-equivalent. Gut recognition.

Raven's matrix

A 3x3 grid with one cell blank. Each row shows a progression of abstract shapes. Pick the shape that completes the last row. The skill is separating rules into independent dimensions (shape, color, count) and solving each.

Police SJT

Scenario: "You respond to a call about a loud argument. The involved parties are uncooperative, but a neighbor insists someone is being harmed inside." Options: enter without waiting, request backup and wait, take statement from neighbor only, leave the scene. The correct answer prioritizes safety (request backup) while still being responsive to the neighbor's report.
